BCP-5 Private ASN Use

Last updated: 17 January, 2008

Status: Current

In the past, it was necessary for OttIX to allocate the use of private AS numbers in order to facilitate connections to the IX. As time wore on, the use of private ASNs fell to practically nothing.

It should be noted however, that this BCP is deprecating BCP 003 not because a falling use, but because it is best operational practice to not use a private ASN on the open Internet. Members who use OttIX are typically those that are multihomed in any case, and therefore have a unique ASN.

According to the IANA, the private ASN's are in the range of 64512 - 65534.

BCP 003 is therefore deprecated and use of private AS numbers are no longer permitted at OttIX.
